Simon Beaufoy Has Sharp Teeth, Danny Boyle May Bite for Next Project : HeyUGuys–UK Movie / Film Blog

Following the critical and commercial bonanza ofSlumdog Millionairewith 127 Hours was a bold move forDanny Boyle.

No doubt the director was offered all manner of scripts bookmarked with blank cheques but he wisely chose to use the Oscar momentum to tell the story he wanted to and now his film, and its lead actorJames Franco, have been nominated for this year’s awards. ScreenwriterSimon Beaufoyhas, along with Boyle,  been nominated for a Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar and news comes today of what may be their next collaboration.

Speaking with Tom Brook forBBC AmericaBeaufoy spoke about a project he is currently working on, a gangland saga with a lycanthropic twist, and mentions that if it all works out then director Danny Boyle is interested in signing up.

Here’s what Beaufoy said,

It’s an adaptation of a book by a writer calledToby Barlowand it’s a very extraordinary mix of gangland Los Angeles, really, really rough — a lot of shootings — and the difference with this particular piece of work is that these gangs can shape-shift at will into packs of dogs

If I write it well enough, {Boyle} will direct it.

Here’s a synopsis for you,

An ancient race of lycanthropes has survived to the present day, and its numbers are growing. Bent on dominance, rival factions are initiating the down-and-out of L.A. into their rnaks. Caught in the middle are Anthony, a kindhearted, lovesick dogcatcher, and the object of his affection: a female werewolf who has abandoned her pack.

Exclusive Featurette: A Look at Carter Burwell’s Score in True Grit : HeyUGuys–UK Movie / Film Blog

I’ve the past couple of days, there have been quite a few different featurette’s released on other movie sites for True Grit. You can see the costume featurette onClothes on Film here, the featurette looking at thecinematography here, a look at the storyhere on Skyand now Paramount have chosen us to debut our very own featurette giving us a look at the score from the movie.

The score for True Grit was composed by veteran movie composer,Carter Burwell. He has a long relationship wokring with the Coen Brothers and has now scored a multitude of movies includingThe Big Lebowski, Raising Arizona,Fargoand has more recently worked on The Blind Side, The Twilight Saga to name but a few!

In this featurette, he talks about how he decided to use church music in the score, as well as talking us through how his music tells it’s own story but works seamlessly with the movie’s visuals. He also talks about how he learns from his musicians when they come to record. This featurette really is fascinating if you’re a fan of movie scores like I am and I think you’ll like this one.

True Grit starsJeff Bridges,Matt Damon,Josh Brolin,Barry Pepper, Hailee Steinfeld and have a read of the synopsis below for more info. We’ve had one trailer for the movie so far which you can seehereand it’s scheduled foe release in the UK 11th February.

Synopsis: Fourteen-year-old Mattie Ross’s (Hailee Steinfeld) father has been shot in cold blood by the coward Tom Chaney (Josh Brolin), and she is determined to bring him to justice. Enlisting the help of a trigger-happy, drunken U.S. Marshal, Rooster Cogburn (Jeff Bridges), she sets out with him — over his objections —to hunt down Chaney. Her father’s blood demands that she pursue the criminal into Indian territory and find him before a Texas Ranger named LeBoeuf (Matt Damon) catches him and brings him back to Texas for the murder of another man.

Today the Music Died– The Timeless Movie Appeal of our Greatest Musical Heroes : HeyUGuys–UK Movie / Film Blog

It is the anniversary of the day Don McLean dubbed‘The Day the Music Died’, in his world famous song American Pie.  The sudden loss of Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and J.P ‘The Big Bopper’ Richardson in 1959 was catastrophic, and each became immortalised in film keeping their music alive and forever young.

Steve Rash’s The Buddy Holly Story, 1978, with Gary Busey received wide acclaim and condemnation alike and the 1987 La Bamba starring Lou Diamond Phillips, was a timely reminder to all of us eighties kids of the wonder of the music that was created by those legends and which affected rock and roll from the1950’s onwards; from Little Richard, Bob Dylan to The Beatles and beyond.

I believe that films about musicians have a thrall to them unlike that of ordinary stories.  Many films and television series have been successful because of their musical scores (I am thinking Dirty Dancing and more recently Glee) and we all recognise that music in film plays a pivotal role.  But films about musicians have an extra resonance.  My personal favourites include the 1986 film Crossroads, Oliver Stone’s The Doors (1991 with Val Kilmer) and Immortal Beloved (1994, starring the inimitable Gary Oldman as Beethoven himself), I also enjoyed What’s Love Got to Do With It which Angel Bassett. There is a strong line of drama in each of these films, and our understanding and appreciation of the music which features is deepened as the story plays out.

There are many films whose musical focus makes them stand out.  Immediately to mind springs This is Spinal Tap (1984), The Blues Brothers (1980) and A Hard Day’s Night (1964).  These lack the biographical edge for my taste, but I can still enjoy them.  I challenge anyone not to love Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles or James Brown in The Blues Brothers, or nottap along to A Hard Day’s Night.  It is as though sound and vision have fused together in a wonderful alchemy and bonded forever in our hearts.

Musicals, and Jukebox films (Mama Mia a recent example) also show the continuing love for some of the music used.  It is the love of the music that makes these films are so special.  In this iPod generation where we can carry with us the soundtrack to our lives, these are films that offer us the opportunity to witness the music being created vividly, often dramatically, if not always accurately.  And on a day that has marked such a loss to music it is we should be thankful to the film-makers out there retelling the stories of our musical legends and keeping the music alive.

Star Wars Volkswagen Superbowl Commercial Uses‘The Force’: HeyUGuys–UK Movie / Film Blog

Sticking with the car theme, here’s another advert which we’ll get to see over the Superbowl weekend and this time it’s for Volkswagen Passat. They’ve used George Lucas’ Star Wars motto to great effect here where a child does his best to‘use the force’ dressed as Darth Vader on various items around the house!

This ad followsthe one I put up not long ago for Chevroletwhich shows Bumblebee getting rather annoyed when he’s attempted to be used for a TV commercial!

It’s a brilliant advert and I think you’ll like it a lot…. cos I did!

This comes from their official YouTube Channel.

Make Them Stop!!!– Another Scary Movie On The Way? : HeyUGuys–UK Movie / Film Blog

The Weinstein Company have a forth instalment of their enormously popular horror franchise Scream on the way, so why not return to the spoof spin-off that has made them a another bucketload of cash too!

For those out there who already bemoan the lack of originality in Tinseltown, and are less than excited at the prospect of Scream 4 heading to the multiplexes soon, an announcement has cropped up on Facebook (and reported byComingSoon) that the brothers Weinstein are planning a Scary Movie 5.

Oh geez! That series of films may have made a very healthy profit for the company in the past (a whooping $800 million worldwide in fact), but this really does smack of creative bankruptcy. Even Scream 4 feels like a completely unnecessary venture, so the idea of returning to its half-assed parody once again is just depressing.

Hasn’t the success of their big Oscar hope The King’s Speech been enough of a tell-tale sign that there is a big audience out there who are hungry for original, quality product?

What are your thoughts on this potential fifth outing? Is it time to put both franchises to sleep for good?
