Killzone 3 Reviews Arrive : HeyUGuys–UK Movie / Film Blog

Killzone 3It’s one of the biggest (and potentially bankable) PS3 games of 2011, and if the first reviews are anything to go by, Sony have struck Helghast Heaven with Killzone 3.

neoGAFnabbed the first review fromCD Action– bizarrely, Poland’s biggest selling video game magazine– which awarded the big budget FPS 9 out of 10.

And– while our Polish isn’t particularly refined– translations have noted that the magazine commends its‘well-balanced campaign’ and‘high difficulty level’. And for the pixel pervs out there, CD Action also labels it“one of the most beautiful games in the world.”

Preventing it from attaining gaming perfection however, is a protagonist without as much depth as your generic wargrunt (our words, not theirs) and a few technical issues.

TheOfficial Playstation Magazinehave also unveiled their verdict, similarly awarding it 9/10 and stating that with the combination of Move and 3D it’s“truly bring{ing} a whole new level of immersion to gaming”.

Killzone 3 hits stores in the UK on February 25.

Morning Glory Review : HeyUGuys–UK Movie / Film Blog

Harrison Fordputs down his whip and exchanges it for a mic and a serious bad attitude to star alongsideSherlock HolmessqueezeRachel McAdamsandDiane Keaton(no stranger to this genre) for newsroom comedy Morning Glory.

McAdams is a young, spirited TV producer Becky Fuller, who we first witness being let go from her New Jersey morning show when the company is forced to downsize. She manages to score a job on below-par morning news show Daybreak (any similarities between its real-life, almost identical UK doppelganger is entirely coincidental). Haemorrhaging viewers by the week, the young executive immediately resolves to turn around the show’s dwindling audience and promptly fires female presenter Colleen Peck’s (Keaton – relaxed and graceful) boorish and pervy co-anchor, and hires Mike Pomeroy (Ford), a veteran newscaster who bemoans the position he’s found himself, doing his best to sabotage Fuller’s best efforts by generally behaving like a old, petty curmudgeon (at one point he refuses to utter the word “fluffy”, claiming he’s offended by it!).

Fuller soon finds herself as referee between Peck and Pomeroy while struggling to maintain a relationship with a fellow employee (played by Watchmen’sPatrick Wilson), to save her reputation, her job and ultimately, the show itself.

Can you guess the outcome? Sure, Morning Glory may be predictable and a tad formulaic, but despite this (and having a soundtrack that sounds like it’s been sourced from Magic FM), these minor shortcomings never distract from all the fun to be had here. It’s the kind of light comedy that Hollywood does so well with the right kind of talent attached, and the film certainly comes with a solid pedigree of talent in front, and behind, the camera. Although not an obvious choice of film to brandish the Bad Robot insignia when it springs up pre-credits, ProducerJ.J. Abrams(Alias, Lost and Star Trek) certainly has his fingerprints over the production– from its tight and economical pacing, it the choices made in casting and direction.

Roger Michellis no stranger to this type of mainstream populist comedy (he fully cementedHugh Grant’s reputation as Brit love interest for hire in Notting Hill) and like that film, he possesses the same, sure-footed approach here. It’s also no surprise to learn that the film was scripted byThe Devil Wears Prada’s Aline Brosh McKenna. We have the same device of the plucky woman trying to make it regardless of her older, seasoned colleagues.

McAdams is her usual, appealing down-to-earth self. It’s a performance which really has you rooting for her character, as she desperately battles to improve on audience figures, whilst faced with the daily tribulation of trying to appease and pacify her two anchors. Her sweet determined nature shines through.

The biggest success casting-wise however is Ford, who is more fun here than he has been in decades, playing the pompous and cranky veteran who speaks in a perpetual growl and can’t help but continuously refer back to the more distinguished and prestigious past career he’s lived. The character could have so easily fallen into a clichéd look at bitterness and arrogance, but Ford is never OTT. His delivery is pitched perfect and his constant putdowns are often extremely biting, yet incredibly funny. It’s also nice to see that the makers don’t try and shoe-horn in a late romance between him and Keaton either.

The film loses a little narrative grip towards the end (and some of its bite) when McAdams is able to push through Pomeroy’s tough exterior to find a wounded soul underneath, but it’s to the actor’s credit (especially Ford) that it doesn’t turn into an out and out mushfest!

Bolstered by an appealing supporting cast (which also includesJeff Goldblumas McAdams’ exasperated boss), in many ways Morning Glory is conventional, sugar-coated Hollywood fare, but it’s never less than thoroughly enjoyable.

Morning Glory is released in the UK cinemas TODAY!

Video Vault– Raiders of the Lost Ark: The Adaptation : HeyUGuys–UK Movie / Film Blog

In 1981 Raiders of The Lost Ark was released and like many young boys Eric Zala, Chris Strompolos and Jayson Lamb saw the film and were enraptured by it.

Like many kids Chris wanted to be Indiana Jones, to have his own adventure, to fight nazis, hunt for treasure and get the girl. He therefore decided that he would remake the whole film shot-for-shot and that he would play the starring role of Indy. Chris discussed this with his friend Eric who agreed to help and realising theycould not achieve the necessary special effects themselves they got another friend, Jayson, involved in the project.

Together, over the next seven years, the three boys, with the help of almost 100 others, made the greatest fan film ever made, Raiders Of The Lost Ark: The Adaptation. When the boys started they were just 11-12 years old and when they finished they were adults. Having finished they screened the film to family and friends and got on with their lives.

Once the boys had decided that they were going to remake Raiders shot for shot they hit their first problem. No video rental copy was yet available for the film so they therefore began collecting anything they could find to help construct a shot-by-shot storyboard. They collected books, artwork, magazine articles and ingeniously even snuck a cassette recorder into the cinema and recorded an audio version of the entire film. Eric then drew out precise and quite incredible storyboards that allowed them to then shoot the whole film shot for shot with little deviation from the original. He also designed costumes for the film which they began making, including turning school uniforms into nazi uniforms.

Although they didn’t keep track of the budget of their film the three agree that it probably cost them roughly $5000 to make over the course of the seven years. Not bad when compared to the $28 million the original Raiders cost. The boys made everything they could and what they couldn’t they asked for for their Birthday and Christmas presents. In parts of the film where they were unable to replicate certain props and scenery their ingenuity is outstanding and often quite amusing. Their replacement for the monkey is a particular highlight.

One of the delights of the film though is seeing them actually accurately replicate things from the original that you just can’t believe they would have been able to. Particularly startling is the stunts that the boys manage to replicate which help recapture one of the greatest elements of the original, practical effects and stunts which felt genuinely dangerous adding real tension to the action sequences. This helped make the Indiana Jones films such exciting action/adventure films and was noticeably lacking from the recent Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, much to the film’s detriment.

In the 14 years following their hometown première the story of these three boys who remade a whole film in their teens became legendary, especially amongst film students, and VHS copies of the film were traded, illegally sold or rented and passed around campuses. In 2003 one such copy of the film was in the hands of director Eli Roth. Eli Rothwas a friend of Aint It Cool founder Harry Knowles who, every year to celebrate his birthday, programmes 24 hours of films at the Alamo Drafthouse in Austin which he calls Butt-Numb-A-Thon (BNAT). Eli Roth was in attendance at the 2003 BNAT and handed Harry a copy of the tape which Harry gave tofellow organiser Tim League. He then put the tape on the side in preparation to play it if they ended up ahead of schedule. Luckily this happened and the film played on the screen to 200 film fans who went nuts, cheering throughout. News of the screening spread and Eric, Chris and Jayson were invited to show the film at the Alamo as a special event with a Q&A. They agreed and the film played to a packed audience who gave them a four minute standing ovation.

If you haven’t seen Raiders of the Lost Ark: The Adaptation it is perhaps hard to understand why this film provokes such a response but this film is the crazy dream of three children, it is the story of three boys growing up, it is a film filled with originality and imagination, and importantly it is a film that shot for shot remakes a damn good film. One of the greatest joys of the film is that this is the story of these three boys growing up. When they first set out, for instance, Chris was unable to grow the necessary stubble and used vaseline and ash to get the required look but by the end of filming he was sporting genuine stubble.

One of the best moments in the film is when the scene where Indy and Marion kiss is replicated, which when viewed with the knowledge that this was Chris’ (then 13) first kiss ever is a pretty magical moment. This kind of moment is exactly what this film is all about. The film is not simply a remake of Raiders but it is also a documentary/home movie of the three boys’ teenage lives, their friendship and the story of them growing up.

Shortly after the Alamo screening and a high profile Variety piece, Hollywood producer Scott Rudin bought the rights to the boys story and plans to make a fictionalised film of their story. Daniel Clowes was attached to write and direct but there seems to have been little movement on the film since this announcement.

Potentially more exciting is the news that that Eric, Chris and Jayson are working on a documentary about the film and that they have over 40 hours outtakes to use. Apparently they are unfortunately faced with“legal hurdles” in getting their Adaptation released which is incredibly sad to hear, especially considering that Spielberg has seen the film and loved it.

It would be an incredible shame if the film remained unseen by the majority of people due to its slightly tricky position as an unauthorised remake. Hopefully soon these legal issues will be resolved and the film can be released, perhaps with an accompanying documentary. Until then the film is occasionally screened with the proceeds going to charity and if you ever get the chance you should rush to one of these rare chances to see this incredible film.

Keira Knightley Joins Robert Pattinson for New Cronenberg Feature : HeyUGuys–UK Movie / Film Blog

This is a piece of casting which immediately makes you think for a moment that you’re seen the two actors in question together in a previous film.

The LA Timesare reporting thatKeira Knightleyis joiningRobert Pattinsonfor David Cronenberg’s futuristic thriller Cosmopolis. TheAtonementactress is replacing FrenchMarion Cotillard, who has an enfant on the way.

It will be interesting to see what Cronenberg has planned for the actress, and for Pattinson, for that matter! The actor already another post-Twilight film in the can (Water for Elephants forI Am Legendhelmer Francis Lawrence) but this role may be the one which see’s him shed that dour Edward persona.

Knightley may benefit from the film too, as I’m sure the seasoned filmmaker is already thinking of ways to subvert the perceived image of her as some kind of English rose.

Blue Valentine Review : HeyUGuys–UK Movie / Film Blog

Blue Valentineis an honest and emotional depiction of the beginning and eventual end of a relationship between Dean (Ryan Gosling) and Cindy (Michelle Williams), showing in parallel the happy beginnings of the relationship and the moments before its final demise.

Most films end at the point the couple finally gets together and we presume they must have a‘happily ever after’ outcome because we don’t know any different. Real life teaches us something else. Real life teaches us about arguments and breakups, about how, as Ryan Gosling sings, you always hurt the ones you love. Life teaches us about the things no one wants to tell you about. No onewants to cause heartbreak or be heartbroken but love rarely lasts forever.

I can’t really say that Blue Valentine is an enjoyable film, or that I loved it because those words don’t fit this film. What I can say is that it’s honest, beautiful, emotional, and heartbreaking with incredible performances from Gosling and Williams, both of who receivedGolden Globe Nominationsfor their roles.

The film starts towards the end of their relationships, about five years into it, and only about twenty minutes in does it begin to flash back to each of their lives, and when they first meet. From then onwards each timeline runs in parallel, fifteen minutes of their present day relationship then fifteen minutes of carrying on where we left off in the past. Unless you already know the time frame is going to be split, the choice to run two timelines can be a little disorientating at first but you quickly adjust, and that split is one of the reasons that makes this film so unique.

Not only is Blue Valentine brutally honest, it’s filmed with a lot of close ups and using a handheld camera, all of which culminates to a film which incorporates so much realism you believe you could be watching a documentary.

Originally given an NC-17 (18) rating in America due to some of its most sexual and violent scenes, it meant it would barely receive any cinematic release and would be equally difficult even to purchase on DVD. Quite possibly making movie history the MPAA changed its mind after an appeal giving it a more deserving R (15) rating. Although Blue Valentine didn’t deserve such an initial high rating, this definitely isn’t a film to take your mum too (Ryan Gosling may have taken his Mum to see it at Sundance but he had an ipod and an eye mask at the ready).

The final scenes are beautifully filmed and edited and are equally heart-warming and heartbreaking. It is possibility my favourite ending ofanyfilm (perhaps only triumphed byRequiem for a Dream). As with any relationship that simply runs its course it’s nearly impossible to force blame on either character, but Dean, tears streaming and utterly fighting his heart out for the relationship took my breath away.

Blue Valentine is certainly not a‘chick-flick’, and one to be entered into cautiously if you have recently/are currently in a break up. The only way to describe it would be the oxymoron romantic tragedy, but for those willing, it is beautiful, poignant, and wonderful.

3DS Battery Life Only 3-5 Hours : HeyUGuys–UK Movie / Film Blog

Nintendo 3DSSo, for those of you willing to fork out the Nintendo’s new groundbreaking (and PS3-priced) 3D handheld, be warned that it comes with a notable caveat.

Kotakureports that Nintendo is placing the battery life of the system between 3 and 5 hours.

On the plus side, that’s only when the machine is using its full wireless and 3D capabilities, and– if the bum-numbing googly-eye sparking experiences we’ve had in cinemas are anything to go by– it’s unlikely you’ll want to play any more after staring at the comparatively tiny screen for over 5 hours anyway.

The Big N went on to estimate that playing the console sans 3D (which kind of defeats the point) will extend the battery life to up to eight hours. Similarly, shutting down the wireless or dimming the screen will increase play time even longer.

The 3DS will hit UK stores on March 25.

Sacha Baron Cohen’s Next is The Dictator, Unleashing Itself May 2012 : HeyUGuys–UK Movie / Film Blog

Sacha Baron Cohenis reuniting withBoratand Bruno director Larry Charles to bring us a comedy inspired by the best seller Zabibah and the King, popular in Iraq due to its author being Saddam Hussein. Yeah…

Paramount Pictures were keen to tell us that the 11th of May 2012 will be the day we’ll all be able to enjoy the film, which has many of the Borat and Bruno creative team behind it.

Here’s how they are selling it,

The film tells the heroic story of a dictator who risked his life to ensure that democracy would never come to the country he so lovingly oppressed.

It’s an odd move, but it could see a curious twelvemonth during which the rising star of Sacha Baron Cohen pulling on biopic trousers as Freddie Mercury as well as this intriguing new tale.

The modern Oracle Wikipedia has this as the book’s cover.

I’d buy that for a dinar.

Fresh from playing real-life self enforced amputee Aaron Ralston in 127 Hours,James Francois being set to play another non-fictional character, satanic serial killer Richard Ramirez.

According to theNew York Posthe’s also down to direct the film, although as wereported earlier this month, he already has another two directorial projects he’s involved in before this feature. Sounds like Franco could benefit from getting his hands on some kind of cloning machine!

Ramirez famously went on a rampage of sexual assault and murder in the mid-eighties in Southern California, and was later found guilty of 13 counts of murder, five attempted murders, 11 sexual assaults and 14 burglaries. He’s currently still on death row in California.

Co-produced by Soundgarden lead singer Chris Cornell and scriptwriter Nicolas Constantine, the film (entitled The Night Stalker) will focus on how Ramirez ended up turning into the notorious serial killer he became.

R.I.P. Susannah York : HeyUGuys–UK Movie / Film Blog

This is some news we didn’t get a chance to report on last week but wanted to pay our respects,. British actress Susannah York has died, aged 72.

Though arguably best known to contemporary film viewers for her role as Lara, mother of Kal-El, in the Superman movies– starring opposite Marlon Brando– York’s screen presence was at its strongest in the 1960s.

She received her first major public attention after appearing in the 1963 adaptation of Tom Jones, a quadruple Academy Award winner. Her keen eye for selection proved itself again when, just three years later, she appeared in A Man For All Seasons, with this project proving itself worthy of six of those same golden statuettes.

In 1968, York stretched herself further, taking on the role of Beryl Reid’s lover in The Killing of Sister George. But it wasn’t until the next year that York’s talents received their highest acclaim as she gained her own Oscar nomination for her part in 1969′s They Shoot Horses, Don’t They?

Still working in the 2000s, York appeared several episodes of the British hospital dramas Holby City and Casualty before going on to concentrate on stage roles including Wuthering Heights and an acclaimed 2009 run of Tennessee Williams’ plays, opposite Jos Vantyler.

She died this passing weekend on Saturday (15th January), following a battle with bone marrow cancer. It was six days after her 72nd birthday.

Actors Lining up for Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter : HeyUGuys–UK Movie / Film Blog

For an actor, playing the part of a famous historical figure has often seen as high integrity gold, but few could have predicted this.

Over the coming fortnight, a plethora of talent– ranging from the established to the comparatively unknown will be screentesting for the chance to play the title role in none other than Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter.

With Adrien Brody, Benjamin Walker, James D’Arcy, Oliver Jackson-Cohen and Josh Lucas all stepping up for the part, it’s clear to see that the project is in high demand, despite– or perhaps because of– its delicious absurdity.

Based on the novel by Seth Grahame-Smith novel (who also wrote the script), 20th Century Fox’s blood soaked tale is a re-imagining of the respected President’s biography that functions by adding the minor detail that old honest Abe was in fact a skilled vampire slayer, determined to take revenge on the ghouls after they took his mother’s life.

Set to be directed by Timur Bekmambetov (who cut his fangs on Night Watch) and produced with help from Tim Burton and Jim Lemley, the film has drawn no shortage of big names and is slated to be released in Summer 2012. Only in Hollywood.

Deadlinereported this story.

Dynasty Movie Is Coming Our Way, and It’s a Prequel : HeyUGuys–UK Movie / Film Blog

It’s the 80s revival you’ve been waiting for.

Forget The A-Team and Transformers movies which lit up cinemas screens over the last few years, forget the endless rumours aboutGhostbusters3– if there was ever a symbol of the 1980s it was the bermuda love triangle of Blake Carrington, Krystle and Alexis who fought, loved, and smouldered in most of the livings rooms of the Western world in Dynasty. And it’s heading to the big screen.

I never saw the series, but was aware that it existed– the opening titles (which you can see below) will throw people back to a time when shoulder pads arched as high up as the hair, and the soap opera was given its greatest soprano in Joan Collins’ bitch from a thousand fathoms, Alexis.

I did begin to watch the series a while ago with some friends, with the moral and material complexities of very rich people in business and love being too much for us to bear, and we never got past the end of the first series (which is when Joan Collins turns up and things were meant to get interesting), but the news that it’s coming back as a movie, a 60s set prequel (and start of a franchise no less) will come as no surprise to anyone following the Hollywood trends.

Anything not nailed down to the 80s is fair game and the creators of the show are keen to tell everyone who will listen that their property is ripe for a good old plucking.

Creator of the series Richard Shapiro talks toE! Onlineabout why on God’s green and pleasant Earth they are thinking about making a movie.

We’ve given thought to the movie before and we’ve been approached by a lot of companies, but no one seemed to have a proper fix on it. Then suddenly we said,‘Let’s do it {ourselves}!’—and we’re the ones to do it.

It was my daughter Florie’s notion to do a prequel, and that sounded very very good to us. It’s how young Blake doesn’t realize he’s the son of Tom Carrington, but then he finds himself at the head of this company and surrounded by assassins and people who want to do him in.

Assassins!

It appears our good friends atComing Soonalso spoke to the man Hollywood knows as Richard Shapiro,

We’re taking the Dynasty family to places they’ve never been before…It’s fun, because the fans of the show will know from the series where each of the characters end up, eventually, but what they won’t know is how they get there.

There will be some very unlikely twists and situations, and people will not be expecting a lot of what we’re planning. We’re going to do a lot of coloring outside the lines…{t}he movie will be the old Dynasty, of course, but with horns.

Horns!

Co-creator Esther Shapiro’s comments inThe Sunare a goldmine,

Nostalgia has always been big, but we want to take it a step further.

Does she mean looking back further? Or maybe she means nostalgiabeforeit’s nostalgia? Which would make it‘experience’. Explain please Esther…

We want to go back to the beginning with these characters and use the film to trace their roots. We’re taking Blake Carrington back to his young manhood and when he met Alexis, and setting the movie in the Mad Men era of the 1960s.

Manhood!

Nothing would entice me into the cinemas more than the promise of Blake Carrington’s young manhood. Richard Shapiro goes on,

In a way, these characters were prisoners in television. In the movie, if we want to have some James Bond-style action, we can afford to do that. If we want to have a steamy love scene, we can do that. If we want to go a few steps beyond what they would allow on 1980s TV, we can move ahead those few steps, and then some.

James Bond in Dynasty? I don’t know. My brain hurts and I need a cool martini to calm me down. Expect more news on this one as the soul of originality and inspiration weep all alone in a small corner of Hollywood.

Jeremy Renner’s Hawkeye Will Appear In Thor : HeyUGuys–UK Movie / Film Blog

The Wrapis reporting thatJeremy Renner(The Hurt Locker) will crop up as Hawkeye in Marvel’s Thor prior to his character’s confirmed appearance in the studios upcoming Avengers project– despite previous ambiguity on the subject.

The news follows conflicting reports from Renner himself about his purported involvement inKenneth Branagh‘s Thor. Suggesting toEmpirethat Hawkeye might appear,“If I was a betting man”, the Oscar nominated actor was quick to dilute his claims.

“But do I know for sure? I can’t say. But I’d love for that to happen. It’d be fun.”

Backtracking in later interviews, Renner was quick to informMovielinethat there was absolutely no truth in the rumours which started as a result of his earlier comments.

“That was just one of those things that got blown way out of proportion. The only reason it came out this early, because‘Avengers’ is two years away, is that they’re thinking OK, we may throw him in‘Thor,’ we may not, as a cameo. You know what I mean? So there’s truth that we talked about it, but there’s no truth to me doing it.”

It now appears, however, that Hawkeye will appear in Thor, though in what capacity it is still unknown. A source alleging to have seen an early copy of the movie has claimed that Renner is present, as well as confirmingSamuel L. Jackson‘s assurances that Nick Fury will not appear in Thor.

Should this prove true, Jackson’s absence– and trends established by Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk– would seem to suggest Renner might appear towards the end of the film to further tease audiences, and Thor himself, with the existence of The Avengers. Either way, the film is scheduled for release on May 6, 2011. Enchanted hammers at the ready.

New Green Lantern Image Reveals Tomar-Re : HeyUGuys–UK Movie / Film Blog

The intriguing visuals of Martin Campbell’s take on DC’s Green Lantern, glimpsedin a few promotional images and the first trailer, are doing a great deal to interest those who perhaps are tiring of the CG superhero slew which made up a big part of the last few years of cinema.

As well as a neat visual identity the cast is phenomenal, withMark Strong,Tim RobbinsandAngela Bassettlining up alongisdeRyan Reynoldsto bring this story to life. The backstory for The Green Lanternis relatively complicatedbut this new image shows off Hal Jordan (our Mr. Reynolds)’s mentor in the Green Lantern gang, Tomar-Re and what a splendid looking chap he is too.

The Daily Blam, aside from having a great name, gave us this image and have this to say about the man/birdface himself,

Growing up on the planet Xudar, Tomar-Re comes from a peaceful avian race that focuses their efforts on the arts and sciences instead of war. His nature to examine everything has led the Guardians of the Universe to appoint him the archivist and protector of the sacred Book of Oa. When not studying the nature of the Corps, Tomar-Re patrols the sector of 2813 where he developed a close friendship with neighboring sector 2814′s Green Lantern, Abin Sur. Tomar has taken an interest in Abin’s replacement, Hal Jordan. Though Hal is not one for details, Tomar hopes to teach Hal what it means to be a Green Lantern.
